I suppose it's worth noting that Obama completely falls into step with this "Santa Clausification" of MLK.

[...] Andrew Golis comments, in an essay entitled “The Santa Claussification of Martin Luther King, Jr.”: on today of all days, it’s worth considering the fact that one of America’s greatest intellectuals and activists, possibly the most powerful leader in the history of the American Left, is remembered condescendingly as a cartoon version of the challenging man he was. It’s worth considering his lost legacy and the mechanism through which we lost it. [...]

On the way in which the white aristocracy used race as a means of maintaining its economic power (read: GOP for the last 40 years)

Certainly the GOP have been the wors offenders for the last forty years, but what has the Democratic Party done to achieve MLK's democratic socialist and pacificist vision? The Democrats won't even defund the war on Iraq or impeach Bush and Cheney for their war crimes.

King was never a man to settle for lesser evils. His greatest ire in "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" is aimed not at out-and-out white supremacists, but at the white moderates, who said they agreed with King but argued against his timing and methods.

I think if King were alive today, he might have a very similar view of many of today's Democrats.
